We are Not Your Grandmother's China

We are Not Your Grandmother’s China… although, I love my Grandmother’s China.

This past weekend I flew home to visit my parents in Arizona.  I ran into my childhood friend Emily, who had just gotten engaged, and naturally I asked her what she and her fiancé were registering for!  She replied bitterly, “We aren’t registering for fine china… we are inheriting my fiancés’ Grandmother’s set…ugh!”.  Of course I thought this was super exciting and asked her if she knew the name of the pattern or the manufacturer.  Emily, of course had no idea, and described it as a floral paisley pattern with a gold rim that was very old fashioned and was just NOT her style.  She and her fiancé were worried that they might offend his Grandmother by registering for something else, so instead they conceded and determined that they would just live with it and bite their tongues on the matter.
I told Emily not to fear… for I, the Gearys’ Bridal Blogger had a solution to this problem!  It’s simple really. Fashion for the table can be just like clothing…it’s all about accessorizing and how you combine different components, that make the outfit complete (or place setting in this instance).   This blog is dedicated to Emily and her fiancé in hopes that I can show them (using MY Grandmother’s china) how they can give an old pattern a modern flair by simply adding tabletop “accessories” in the form of colored chargers and linens, mixed with more contemporary stemware and flatware.
My Grandmother’s china, that has since been passed down to my parents is beautiful and holds great sentimental value to my family and me. It is an old retired Rosenthal pattern called “Meissen”. This dinnerware has shared many holiday meals and memories, beginning when my Dad was a kid continuing on throughout my childhood, and hopefully will be used by my children some day as well.  Although this pattern is lovely, it wouldn’t have been something I would have personally selected to register for myself, because I prefer a more modern look.  However, if I were to have received it for a wedding gift, here’s how I would have made it work for my lifestyle, while still incorporating and maintaining the integrity of my Grandmother’s china pattern.

Gearys Dinnerware Makeover:

BEFORE:

The “traditional look” as my Grandmother had used when she set the table with her china shown with her Wallace Grande Baroque sterling silver flatware and Waterford stemware.

AFTER:

With the help of our Bridal Staff at Gearys, we breathed new life into my Grandmother's china pattern.  By adding just a pop of color, a textured placemat, napkin, napkin rings and a less traditional stemware pattern, we have given this pattern a completely different look.

Shown above with a sparkly beaded placemat, a brick colored Haviland charger, wood flatware and clean modern stemware from Steuben.

When we framed the dinner plate with a sky blue charger, the colors of the flowers popped!

Playing with colored chargers and linens:

Hopefully after reading this blog, and witnessing the transformation of my Gram’s dinnerware, Emily and her fiancé will find comfort and excitement about inheriting and personalizing their own Grandmother’s china.  You see, there is a dinnerware solution to anything!

Annie

Gearys Bridal Spotlight: Rachel Norris & David Madden

Gearys Bridal Spotlight:
Rachel Norris & David Madden

Wedding Date: June 17th, 2011

This past weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of tagging along as this adorable couple registered for their upcoming wedding!  Rachel and Dave are a picture perfect couple… not only are they two of the most delightful people, but they are going to make a gorgeous Bride and Groom.  Dave’s mom Annette came along to offer advice and encouragement and was a joy to have share in the experience!

Rachel, who hails from England, met her fiancé Dave (from Pasadena) in September 2007.  They bonded over their mutual appreciation for British bands and have been happily together for 3 and a half years!

Dave’s proposal was nothing short of a romantic fairy tale…  After a private 7 course dinner at the chef’s counter at the restaurant in the Montage Hotel, he took Rachel up to the rooftop pool area overlooking the city of Beverly Hills, got down on one knee and pulled out a spectacular engagement ring!

This lovely couple is tying the knot at St. Charles Church in Grange Over Sands, England, followed by a reception at the Netherwood Hotel this summer!  I definitely “Googled” this venue and it looks phenomenal… the perfect place for a delightful English summer wedding.

Now onto my favorite part of the engagement process… the BRIDAL REGISTRY!!
Rachel & Dave had met on a previous date with their fabulous Gearys Bridal Specialist, Lorelei Larson, beginning their registry process.  Lorelei had prepared a table with their initial dinnerware selections so they could have a fresh look at it upon arrival.

China Pattern:
Medard de Noblat  “Corail”-
This beautiful pattern is White Porcelain (made in Limoges, France)
It is inspired by sea motifs… and the best part of all, it can be placed in the dish- washer or microwave for easy every day use (Rachel and Dave were super excited about this).  However, it can also be dressed up in a full table setting and used for fine dining!

Stemware Pattern:
Orrefors “Dizzy Diamond”

I snapped one quick posed shot before the registering began!

After choosing the dinnerware and stemware patterns it was time to put it all together by picking out complementary flatware!  Rachel and Dave searched our stainless steel flatware wall until they found the perfect pattern to accompany their dinnerware selections!
 Flatware Pattern:
Chambly “Baguette”

This is a classic elegant pattern crafted in France of stainless steel.  It can also be placed in the dish-washer as well, and does not require polishing (a huge plus!)
The next step was finding the right placemat to frame the entire dinner setting!  With Lorelei’s help, they selected a sparkly woven lattice silver vinyl placemat by Chilewich.  These are perfect for chic dining AND easy clean-up, because they do not require laundering, but can simply be wiped off!
We then moved along to the G- Bar where Rachel and Dave selected their barware patterns.  We had to find the perfect size/ weight Double Old Fashioned to fit comfortably into both Rachel’s and Dave’s hands.

Barware Pattern:
Orrefors  “On the Rocks”
Martini Glasses, Double Old Fashioned, & Tumblers  (all sold as pairs)

For any bridal registry the giftware is a VERY important component because many people LOVE to purchase unique gifts for the Bride and Groom that won’t get lost amidst the dinnerware (although I do remember my friends who bought me my favorite cereal bowls and I think about them over a nice bowl of cereal every morning).

The soon-to-be newlyweds absolutely fell in love with the Simon Pearce Giftware…

Simon Pearce Giftware

Fun FACT: Have you seen the movie “Sweet Home Alabama”?  Well the Deep South Glass featured in that movie was actually by Simon Pearce!

Hand-blown glass made in the USA (Vermont to be exact!)
They chose gorgeous Simon Pearce napkin rings to adorn their Garnier Thiebault Napkins and put the finishing touches on their dinnerware place setting!
Featured under Rachel’s Shoe:
Wedgwood’s (Vera Wang)- “Grosgrain Platinum” teacup
In the course of talking about whether their china was too fragile to use every day we spoke about how strong fine china is despite the fact that it appears to be so delicate and fragile.  To demonstrate the great strength of fine dinnerware, we had Rachel stand on the teacup and strike a pose!

Lorelei and I had a blast spending the afternoon with this amazing couple and helping them find the perfect table for their future married lifestyle.

Check in next week for a new Blog entry.

Wecome to the GEARYS Bridal Dish!

Happy New Year my Fellow Gearys Brides!

In typical LA fashion, it is early February and the sun is shining brightly upon our gorgeous city.  It’s 2011 and we are already off to an excellent start this year with many exciting changes happening here at Gearys!  First and foremost, I’d like to announce the debut of the first EVER “Gearys Bridal Dish” (aka “blog”).

I’d like to begin by introducing myself, as I am now your official Gearys blogger!  My name is Annie, I have been the Assistant Buyer for Tabletop and Giftware here at Gearys for the past 3 years.  Most importantly, I have also had the fabulous experience of being a Gearys Bride!  I will be here to guide you through the exciting registry experience (which is the best part of being engaged) and hold your hand through what can be an adventure to say the least.

Creating your wedding registry with your fiancé should be a really fun experience… however it can also be a daunting and overwhelming task when you are quickly handed a scanner gun and a mile-long list filled with words that don’t appear in our every day life…AND you are expected to blindly stumble about the store picking out everything you need for your newlywed home.

This is a sample of what you might see on (da da da!)THE DEPARTMENT STORE REGISTRY LIST
(reading this with your trusty scanner gun in hand!)

Dinnerware:

Chargers (huh???)
Dinner Plates
Salad Plates
Bread & Butter Plates
Tea Cups & Saucers

As a typical twenty-something or thirty-something year old we might find ourselves perplexed, wondering…“Chargers… Hmmm you mean the thing that I plug my Blackberry into?  Why would I register for that?”

Here at Gearys, we don’t have scan-guns.  We have highly experienced and very patient personal bridal registry consultants who personally guide you and your fiancé through the entire registry experience and explain to you that a “Charger” (aka Service Plate, Presentation Plate, or Buffet Plate) is in fact the larger plate that goes underneath your dinner plate. We will help define the other odd words that you may find on a bridal registry (ie. Ramekin…)   Say what?... I know, it’s confusing.  That’s what we are here for!

Just FYI… a Charger has MANY functions…

-First of all, it is a tabletop accessory that is used as an addition to the 5 piece place setting. It is basically a chic dish that is placed on the table beneath the dinner plate for style purposes as well as multiple functions. Sized slightly larger than the dinner plate, the style or color of the charger plate frames the dinnerware and enhances the entire table setting.

-Secondly, it can be used as an over-sized dinner plate, especially for us Americans who love to eat! (many of our brides register for these instead of the regular sized dinner plates)

-Thirdly, it can be used as a serving platter for cheese or cookies/ brownies.

-Finally, think about those holiday gatherings you are going to start hosting in the future when you may have too many people.  They make an excellent large Buffet plate!

A Ramekin is a small dish used for the preparation and serving of certain food dishes (ie crème brûlée), but I’m sure you’ll come up with many other uses as well (they are a perfect size for a nut or candy dish).

Please feel free to post any questions or comments on this blog and I will be happy to respond and always appreciate your feedback.
